Tucson Parks Department Launches Free Fitness Programs for Seniors
The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department rolls out no-cost group exercise sessions aimed at residents aged 60 and older across multiple parks and centers.
How we reported this
The City of Tucson Parks and Recreation Department began offering free senior fitness classes on July 1 at three public locations, with sessions running through the end of the year.
Tucson’s population over age 65 grew by 14 percent between 2020 and 2025, according to Pima County demographic reports, pushing the recreation department to expand low-barrier exercise options before summer heat peaks. Council members approved the funding in May after reviewing participation data from last winter’s pilot sessions that drew 312 unique seniors.
Classes at Reid Park and Armory Park
Residents can join chair yoga and balance training at Reid Park’s north lawn on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8 a.m., or attend seated strength circuits at Armory Park on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. Both sites provide shaded areas and water stations, and participants need only bring a towel. The department also schedules a Friday morning walking group that starts at the Santa Cruz River path near St. Mary’s Road and ends at the Mercado San Agustín after 45 minutes.
City records show 187 seniors attended at least one session during the first week of July. Each class caps at 25 people to maintain instructor ratios, and registration opens online or by phone at the Parks and Recreation main office on 900 S. Randolph Way. No membership card or proof of income is required.
How to join upcoming sessions
New participants can sign up through the city’s Parks and Recreation website or call 520-791-4878 before 4 p.m. the day prior. Schedules list exact meeting spots and any weather-related cancellations posted by 7 a.m. each morning. The program continues at no charge through December, with additional fall classes planned at Himmel Park once temperatures drop.
